Travel Nurse (RN) - Progressive Care Unit

Required Skills/Experience: First-time travelers accepted if greater than 1 year of experience. Comfortable taking Med Surg assignments. Previous experience with IMC/stepdown acuity and neuro patients. Ability to read/interpret cardiac strips, chest tubes, trach care (no fresh traches), NGT tube placement and management, JP drains, line management - PICC/Midline/CVL/PIV placement, wound vacs (Wound Care RN will change out the vac, but RN must know how to assess and will need to change to wet/dry dressing in case of malfunction), wound care/dressing changes, medication administration, TPN/tube feeding, blood product transfusions, urinary and fecal collection devices. Drip titration experience with Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Levophed (up to 5 mcg), occasionally esmolol drips (will train if traveler has not done these), or other beta blockers or other antihypertensives.

Preferred Skills/Experience: Post neuro-intervention experience preferred; education and resources are provided by the unit if the traveler has not had this patient type.

Special Requests: You can only have 1 active application for the same position (same unit and shift at the same facility). Example: if you apply for day shift, you can also apply for night shift on the same unit and facility, but you cannot apply for another day shift position on the same unit and facility. Permanent staff must wait 1 full year before returning as a traveler. Holiday RTO must be requested prior to offer; holiday RTO is not currently being accepted. Able to approve 1.5 weeks off; must extend contract to accommodate a full 13-week contract. No time off is approved during August 1-18th due to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally (exact dates change each year).

Unit Details: Mixed-acuity Ortho/Neuro/Surgical unit with intermediate care, telemetry, and Med Surg patients. Surgical cases include urology, prostatectomy, bowel obstruction, mass removal, cholecystectomy, appendectomy, and general abdominal surgeries. Ortho cases include total joints (knees/hips/shoulders) and ortho trauma such as external fixation, soft tissue injury, and minor fractures. Neuro/spine cases include CVA/TIA with neurovascular intervention (coiling, clipping, and potentially thrombectomy), seizures/epilepsy, brain tumor, hematoma, brain aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation, AV fistula, craniotomies with burr holes and/or shunts, halos, flaps, laminectomies, fusions, and discectomies. General medical patients include cellulitis, influenza, COVID, pneumonia, COPD, CHF, renal failure with or without the need for hemodialysis, hepatic failure, rib fracture, gastrointestinal disorders and infections, DVTs, and UTIs. Telemetry monitored patients; wound care and wound debridement. Post neuro-intervention patients may return to the unit if stable; modified ratios are used in the immediate post-op timeframe with CRN/flex RN support. Uses Alaris and Omnicell. Pod structure is 8 patients per pod staffed with 2 RNs and 1 nurse aide; two charge nurses for ONS do not take a patient load, and a flex nurse is staffed daily 10a-10p. Phlebotomy, RT, and hospitalist support are available; there is no IV/VAT team. Could be expected to precept students.

Shift & Scheduling: 6-week schedules. Travelers could be scheduled for up to 4 out of the 6 weekends, including Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Every weekend scheduling may be a possibility. No mandatory call time. If it is an extra shift on top of scheduled hours and staffing is sufficient, the shift could be placed on call.

Floating Requirements: Float to adult inpatient units including Med Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular Unit, Oncology, and Observation. Could be floated within scope of practice and below. Will float in rotation with other travelers.
