Required Skills/Experience:
Must-have skills include CRRT, hemodynamic monitoring, chest tubes, ventilators, and various drains/surgical sites.
Preferred Skills/Experience:
Previous experience in a very busy hospital is preferred.

Parking costs $15+/day, with on- and off-campus garage and lot options ranging from $95-$120 per monthly parking pass.
Unit Details:
Common diagnoses and procedures include liver/kidney transplant; vascular surgeries such as endarterectomies and fem/pop bypass; ENT for cancer; facial flaps; throat cancer resection; complicated throat/esophageal infections that compromise the airway; and abdominal surgery such as colectomy, ex-laps, abdominal aneurysm, mastectomy, and deep-tissue flaps.
Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:2 or 1:3 depending on downgrade, acuity, or emergency admission; emergency admissions are infrequent when staffed.
RNs are required to titrate drips.
Common titratable and/or set-rate drips include vasopressin, epinephrine, Levophed, heparin, dobutamine, dopamine, Versed, hydromorphone, fentanyl, ketamine, Nimbex, esmolol, and Cardene.
Intensivists are on the unit days and/or nights, and APPs are on the unit 24/7.
Respiratory therapists are in the ICU 24/7.
Respiratory equipment includes ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, and high flow; RNs are generally not required to do more than troubleshoot this equipment.
No monitor technicians are assigned; RNs read their own strips on Philips monitors.
Patient care tech support is intermittent and depends on census; when present, the ratio is 1:12, and duties include patient ADLs, blood glucose checks, and transport assistance.
Shift & Scheduling:
Candidates need to be flexible on scheduling; self-scheduling is not available, and scheduling is based on unit needs.
Weekend requirements are 4-6 days in 6 weeks, depending on coverage.
Standby may be flexed off if census is low; standby is required only if the unit closes for low census, which is not usually a problem and may occur about once per year.
Floating Requirements:
The clinician is first to float, followed by OT floats and then the remainder of staff; floating is to other ICUs within the hospital, with the skill set considered for the assignment.
