Travel Nurse (RN) - Progressive Care Unit

Required Skills/Experience:

• First-time travelers accepted if greater than 2 years' experience.
• Cardiac and vasoactive drip titration, cardiac rhythm interpretation, IV starts, blood product administration, CIWA, drain/tube management, indwelling and straight catheter insertion/management, insulin drips for DKA and non-DKA, continuous bladder irrigation, and chest tube maintenance.
• Drip titration commonly includes Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, and Levophed (up to 5 mcg); occasional esmolol drips or other beta blockers or antihypertensives, with training available if the traveler has not done these.

Required Credentials:

• Completion of a nursing education program that is approved by a board of nursing.

Special Requests:

• You can only have 1 active application for the same position (same unit & shift at the same facility). Example: if you apply for day shift, you can also apply for night shift on the same unit and facility, but you cannot apply for another day shift position on the same unit & facility.
• Previous permanent staff must wait 1 year before returning as a traveler.
• Up to 7 days of time off may be approved.
• Must extend the contract if unable to work a full week to accommodate a 13-week contract.
• No RTO during Sturgis Bike Rally (first 3 weeks every August).

Unit Details:

• Adult patients with diagnoses including CHF, ARF, hepatitis, ESLD, DM, DKA, pneumonia, sepsis, GI bleed, syncope, chest pain, pulmonary emboli, respiratory failure, COPD, arrhythmias, seizure disorders, overdose, and delirium tremors.
• Ratios may vary by assignment: 1:4 on PCU/Tele and 1:5 on Med/Surg when floated.
• Team nursing model may include an RN paired with an LPN; both carry their own patient loads, with some task swapping due to scope.
• Uses Alaris and Omnicell.
• Phlebotomy is available 24/7 for peripheral blood draws only; RNs draw from central lines.
• Resource nurse is available as staffing allows to assist with admissions, discharges, transfers, and task items.
• Hospitalists are in house 24/7; provider communication uses paging and secure chat.
• Centralized telemetry monitoring is available 24/7 for telemetry reading and alarm notifications.
• Violent Incident Response team available.
• May be expected to precept students.

Shift & Scheduling:

• Weekend rotation is every other weekend or 50% of weekends per 4-week schedule; weekends are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
• Travelers are not scheduled on-call hours, but may be placed on call related to low census if hours are over weekly contract hours or if the traveler requests to be low-censused on call.
• Every other holiday minimum during the contracted timeframe.
• Huddles are required prior to shift start at 0625 & 1825 in the 7th floor conference room.

Floating Requirements:

• Floats to adult inpatient units including Med/Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular Unit, Oncology, ICU (depending on experience), and Observation.
• Could be floated within scope of practice and below.
• Will float in rotation with other travelers.
