Travel Nurse (RN) - Pediatric Emergency Department

Shift & Scheduling:

• Manager/scheduler driven; no self-scheduling.
• Every other weekend required.
• No on-call.
• Holidays are required, as needed.

Unit Details:

• Nurse/patient ratios: 1:1-3/4, Fast Track 1:5/6. 0700-1100: 10, 1100-1500: 14, 1500-2300: 15, 2300-0300: 14, 0300-0700: 10 (3-4 RNs per zone).
• High-volume pediatric ED averaging 200 patients daily and 65000+ per year.
• Pediatric minor illness through major trauma; 40% transfers from other hospitals.
• No in-house psychiatry or psychiatric beds; 2 safe rooms in ED for acute psychiatric patients. Patients are medically stabilized and transferred to a psychiatric facility.
• Average length of stay is 3.5 hours. Average wait for an admission bed is 6 hours from arrival to ED.
• Age range is birth to under 21 years old, with occasional adult patients.
• Security in ED with metal detectors and an off-duty Little Rock police officer present 1500-2300.
• Uses Sigma and Med Fusion 3500 syringe pumps.
• RNs and paramedics start PIVs and perform phlebotomy; RNs, techs, and paramedics perform 12-lead EKGs.
• Travelers do not triage and do not handle SANE cases.
• PCT support includes vitals, stocking, EKGs, ALS team, POCT, holding for procedures, room cleaning, and ADLs.
• Paramedics assist with PIV insertion, IO insertion, medication administration, splinting, and ALS team.
• In-house transport system; RTs manage ventilators; standardized airway carts; pharmacy responds to all codes.
• Physician-initiated orders.
