Unit Details: Nurse-to-patient ratios: Med/Surg 1:4-6 depending on acuity; ICU 1:1-3 depending on acuity, with mixed assignments that may include ICU, MS-Tele, and swing-bed patients. Common patient populations/diagnoses include medical, surgical, pediatric, skilled or acute rehab (swing-bed), and ICU patients including DKA, sepsis, alcohol withdrawal, hyper/hypotension, CHF/COPD exacerbation, basic surgical patients, and comfort care. RNs are required to titrate drips, including blood pressure medications, insulin, cardiac medications, morphine/Versed drips for comfort care patients, and heparin on the MS-Tele side; all other drips are for ICU-acuity patients only. No monitor techs; nurses are responsible for their own cardiac patients. Tele monitoring uses Mindray machines. RT administers respiratory treatments and assists with CPAP, BiPAP, high flow, and vents; RNs may be asked to administer respiratory treatments and manage RT equipment when RT is tied up in an emergency.
Shift & Scheduling: Self-scheduling with guidelines. 3 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule. One major and one minor holiday per season. Nurses or CNAs may be placed on call if census permits; this is an extra shift or employee choice.
Floating Requirements: Med/Surg/ICU are all one unit; may be helping hands to LTC, ER, and OB.
