Required Skills/Experience:

  • Must have unit/specialty experience in the past 6 months.
  • Level II NICU experience required.

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Level III NICU preferred.

Required Credentials:

  • Pass/fail sim lab for Foley catheter insertion required on day 1 of orientation.

Special Requests:

  • Any employment gaps greater than 30 days must be explained.
  • Cannot apply to more than one job order on the same unit and shift at the facility.
  • Block scheduling is usually not done but may be considered as long as unit needs are fulfilled.

Unit Details:

  • Level II NICU and Special Care Nursery (SCN).
  • Ratios: NICU 2:1; SCN 3:1.
  • Babies 28 weeks and above. High-level care with many respiratory complications; uses vents, CPAP, RAM, and Vapotherm nasal cannulas.
  • Common diagnoses/patient types: hyperbilirubinemia, meconium aspiration, respiratory distress syndrome, PPHN, IUGR, chorioamnionitis, PICC lines, TTN, chest tubes, passive cooling, exchange transfusions, pneumothoraces, UAC/UVC, and sepsis.
  • SCN sees lower-acuity NICU diagnoses, including CPAP, blood transfusions, and NAS.
  • Surgical patients and babies less than 28 weeks are transferred to St. Joseph or Phoenix Children's; some cardiac babies go to Phoenix Children's.
  • Uses GE monitors, Puritan Bennett 840, Draeger, Vision BiPAP, and V60s.
  • NNPs are in house 24/7; neonatologist is in house during the day; RT is available 24/7 and manages vents.

Shift & Scheduling:

  • 4 weekend shifts in a 4 week schedule; for nights, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday count as weekend shifts.
  • Holiday rotation with permanent staff; assigned in groups planned 3 years out.
  • Self-scheduling. Nurses submit schedule requests and the scheduler reviews and balances the schedule fairly between staff.

Floating Requirements:

  • Will float to sister facility MGMC; travelers will not be floated out of the NICU.
