Unit Details:
Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:3-5 and vary based on acuity or department needs.
Patient population ranges from newborns to elderly patients, including minor and critically ill patients with a wide variety of complaints.
The department regularly cares for patients in cardiac arrest and those with strokes and heart attacks.
Level 1/2 trauma patients are cared for in the trauma bay by a specialized trauma team; travelers may care for stabilized trauma patients after transfer to a pod but are not likely to be primary nurses in the trauma bay.
The ED titrates a wide variety of drips, including vasopressor, cardiac, and antihypertensive drips.
Respiratory equipment includes vents, CPAP, BiPAP, and high-flow devices; respiratory therapists assist with this equipment, and nurses troubleshoot it.
The ED uses Phillips monitors; nurses interpret and act on patient rhythms, including life-threatening rhythms, and travelers are oriented to monitor use.
Radiology staff or transport handle X-ray/CT transport.
Nurses and techs draw labs; phlebotomy sometimes draws labs for boarders.

Shift & Scheduling:
Positions are not day/night rotating.
Travelers do not self-schedule; the scheduling manager assigns shifts.
Every other weekend rotation; weekend coverage for this schedule is Saturday/Sunday.
Every other weekend usually results in a 2-on, then 4-on rotation; schedules of 6 consecutive shifts can usually be accommodated.
No call requirement for travelers.

Floating Requirements:
The ED nurse may be floated to other units as a "help all"; this is rare and travelers are typically not the clinicians floated. If floated, the ED nurse would not be expected to take a team on another unit.
