Additional Information

Unit Details: Provides daily care for cancer patients, including accurate interpretation and delivery of radiation treatments in accordance with the prescription and instruction of the radiation oncologist. May perform simulations and provide clinical instruction for radiation therapy students. Required during brachytherapy procedures. Must assist in treatment planning procedures, including tumor localization and dosimetry. Triages sick patients to nursing for evaluation. Checks prescription, diagnosis, chart, and patient identification; schedules patients; explains pre-treatment and post-treatment procedures; answers questions and reassures patients. Interfaces with the physicist and dosimetrist at initiation of treatment and acts as a liaison with supportive care physicians, nurses, and social workers. Prepares room and equipment according to the prescription, including immobilization devices, field sizes, treatment devices, distance, and lead protection devices. Takes and checks images of all treated areas; transfers patients to the treatment couch; maintains visual and audible contact with patients during treatments; maintains patient markings and changes them per physician direction. Reinforces recommendations regarding treatment reactions and care of the radiated area, including dressing and hygiene; changes dressings as necessary; observes for unusual reactions or events and assists in emergency treatment. Observes radiation safety measures, checks charges daily for accurate billing, documents treatment doses accurately, and treats patients with the original electronic chart at all times. Sets up IMRT and 3-D patients properly in CT, makes immobilization devices for 2-D, 3-D, and IMRT patients, documents proper setup instructions, and documents pertinent information for dosimetry calculations in charts.

Shift & Scheduling: Mon-Fri; some variation depending on the schedule. Weekend requirements: none. On-call requirements: none.
