The ER has no separate fast-track or triage area; patients are triaged out the door.
The ER has no separate holding area; ER holds are intermixed within the ER.
The ER has no separate psychiatric/seclusion rooms.
Security is not in-house 24/7 or housed in the ER.
Approximately 12 patients are treated in the ER per day.
Nurses usually care for one patient at a time, rotating assignments.
Approximately 60-75% of cases are urgent care; there is no local urgent care.
The ER treats strokes, myocardial infarctions, and trauma from motor vehicle collisions; there is no cath lab, and critical patients are stabilized and transferred.
An on-call trauma team is rarely activated.
Common drips include insulin, pain management, and tPA.
A midlevel provider or PA is always present in the ED.
The charge nurse/house supervisor is a shared role and may take a patient assignment.
RT is available 6a-6p M-F; during RT off times, paramedics manage ventilators and BiPAP after physician orders, while RNs manage drips and other care.
Lab or a midlevel performs ABGs, and a secondary nurse performs EKGs.
Mindray monitors are used, and RNs monitor their own telemetry from the central station.
The central RN station is between the ER and Medical-Surgical units and provides visibility to all monitors.
X-ray and CT are in close proximity and available most hours (5 hours on call); otherwise, they are in-house.
An in-house lab is available 24/7, and RNs may draw labs from IV starts.

Shift & Scheduling:
Weekend requirements are every other or third weekend, determined for each contract.
Holiday coverage includes filling holiday gaps.
No call or standby requirement.
There are no low-census call-offs; if there are no inpatients, all RNs stay.

Floating Requirements:
Floats to Medical-Surgical during any shift, taking Medical-Surgical and ER patients on the same shift and rotating between them; the units are in separate halls.
