Additional Details:

Required Skills/Experience:

  • 3 years of ICU experience with 1 year of CVICU experience.
  • First-time travelers accepted if they meet the 3 years of ICU experience with 1 year of CVICU experience requirement.
  • Competent in invasive line monitoring (Swan Ganz, a-lines), pacemakers (epicardial, transvenous), chest tubes, cardiac medications (inotropes, vasopressors, sedation/paralytics), ventilator/trach management, and cardiac rhythm interpretation.

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Specific CV surgical experience preferred: ECMO, CVVH, IABP, VAD.

Unit Details:

  • Cardiac patient population includes immediate post-op CABG, TAVR/TMVR, valve repairs/replacement, heart transplants, and pacemakers (epicardial, transvenous).
  • Thoracic cases include fresh post-op esophagectomy, pneumonectomy, and lobectomy.
  • Vascular cases include fresh post-op AAA, TVAR, and carotid endarterectomy.
  • RN ratios: 1:1, 1:2 if regular ICU status, 1:3 mixed status.
  • RNs draw from invasive lines and are not allowed to do peripheral sticks.
  • Charge nurse rarely has a patient assignment.
  • Dedicated CVICU intensivist 24/7, CT surgeon on call 24/7, hospitalist onsite 24/7, general intensivist 24/7, and ICU-designated RT 24/7.
  • Bedside/nurses station telemetry monitoring; no telemetry tech.
  • Phlebotomy assists with peripheral blood draws.
  • Uses Alaris IV pumps, Pyxis medication dispensing, and GE monitors.

Shift & Scheduling:

  • Weekend rotation: every third weekend.
  • No call.
  • Holiday expectations: 1-2 per contract.
  • RTO: up to 7 days may be approved.
  • Shift times: 0700-1900 or 1900-0700.
  • 6-week schedule cycle.
  • Staff cannot work more than 60 hours in a week or 5 consecutive 12-hour shifts.

Floating Requirements:

  • May float to ED Holding (board patients waiting for an inpatient bed), other ICUs (MRICU, SICU, CICU, Neuro ICU), MSU (ratio 1:3), sitter, and PACU surge.
