Required Skills/Experience: EKG/telemetry strip reading and interpretation required. Medication titration required.
Unit Details: Nurse-to-patient ratios: days 1:4-5, nights 1:5-6. Common diagnoses/patient population include MI, CHF, A-fib, COPD, pacemaker/AICD placement, lung surgery patients with frequent chest tubes, esophagectomy patients not fresh from PACU, and general med overflow. RNs titrate drips, mainly Cardizem and heparin. Uses Phillips telemetry monitors; monitor techs are available. PCT support ratios: days 1:8-9, evenings 1:9-10, nights 1:10-12. RT equipment includes CPAP, BiPAP for home-regimen patients, and heated high flow in special circumstances with COVID patients. 24/7 charge nurse and house supervisor; charge nurse rarely takes patients.
Shift & Scheduling: Every other weekend; nights work Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday. Holiday rotation; nights include Memorial Day Eve, July 3rd, Labor Day Eve, Thanksgiving Eve, Christmas Eve, and New Year's Eve. No call at this time.
Floating Requirements: Float to other general medical units.
