Required Skills/Experience: Must have total joint experience. Understanding of PCA pumps, reversal drugs (Narcan), sepsis management, TPN/lipids, and narcotic usage. 1 year of surgical experience required.
Unit Details: Inpatient surgical Med Surg/Telemetry unit. Nurse:patient ratios 1:4-6; nights 1:5-6. LPNs are available, and virtual admission and discharge nurses assist. Primary care nursing model is frequently used. Common patient population and cases include neuro patients, laminectomy, cervical fusion, LESI, ostomies, hernia repair, total hip/knee joint replacement, PICC, TPN, lipids, fem-pop bypass, dialysis catheter insertions, BKA, AKA, dialysis, epidurals, IV antibiotics, chronic pain, sepsis, and urgent OR cases. RNs titrate heparin drips per protocol. Tele monitor techs monitor the unit; RNs interpret strips. Uses Draeger tele monitors. Charge nurse takes a smaller assignment to assist. CNAs are available, though they may be pulled to sit. Night shift has higher CNA needs. Uses CPAP home units; Airvo may be used. RT manages respiratory equipment. Bipap is used occasionally and will stay on the unit. Fast-paced unit with heavy patients; can get 8-12 surgery admits per day while discharging patients at the same time.
Special Requests: Will not guarantee block scheduling. Discuss with leader for any scheduling needs.
Shift & Scheduling: Every other weekend; Saturday and Sunday for both shifts. Holiday rotation with core staff. No call.
Floating Requirements: Float to like units only. If floated to higher acuity, it would be as a help-all and not with a patient load.
