Required Skills/Experience:
3 years of recent experience in Critical Care is required (at least 2 years in ICU).
Recent ICU experience is required within the last year (updated 07/2026).
Invasive line management (CVP, A-lines) is required; the RN may have to assist with bedside central line insertions.
Experience with insulin drips and critical care drips is required.
Cardiac rhythm interpretation, BiPAP and ventilator management, and Vapotherm are firm requirements.
Experience with drains and chest tubes is required.
Preferred Skills/Experience:
Experience with balloon pumps is preferred, although balloon pumps are not typically given to travelers.
Temporary pacemaker experience is preferred; temporary pacemakers are usually given to staff.
Special Requests:
Permanent staff must wait 2 years before returning as a traveler.
Up to 5 days of time off may be approved; longer requests require manager approval.
If requesting a full week of time off, the assignment must be extended to accommodate a 13-week contract.
Unit Details:
The assignment is on a generalized ICU/stepdown combined unit; a separate cardiac ICU is present.
Patient population includes respiratory failure, GI bleeds, DKA, sepsis, CVAs/TIAs, post-arrest patients, ETOH/IVDA cases, and complicated postoperative patients.
Cardiac cases include rule-out chest pain, dysrhythmias, patients before and after (48-72h) cardiac/vascular procedures (carotid endarterectomies, revascularization, pacemaker insertion/upgrades, status post cardiac catheterization, and amputations due to vascular insufficiency), and downgrades from CVICU.
There is a pediatrics unit but no PICU; on rare occasions, a pediatric patient may be admitted to this unit until the patient can be stabilized and transferred or transported out.
Pediatric patients are typically older children, but the unit can take patients 1-year-old and older.
Patient ratios are 1:2-3, depending on acuity.
CNA/HUC support is staffing dependent and not always available.
A free-floating charge nurse serves as a resource.
The RN responds to codes/RRTs and may assist with HUC duties when support is unavailable.
Phlebotomy performs peripheral draws.
RT, an in-house intensivist, and a house supervisor are available 24/7.
Equipment includes BD Alaris IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors.
CRRT is not provided at this facility at this time.
Shift & Scheduling:
Weekend rotation is every other weekend.
No call.
Holiday rotation is required.
Shift times are 7a-7p or 7p-7a; clinicians cannot clock in until 7 minutes before the shift starts.
The schedule cycle is 4 weeks.
Floating Requirements:
CVICU assignments exclude patients who are fresh (24 hours) post open-heart surgery; the RN is expected to take ICU overflow.
The RN may float to PCCU (Cardiac Stepdown) based on census.
The RN may float to ED Holding as a task RN for ICU overflow/holding.
