Required Skills/Experience:
Critical care experience required.
One travel contract required.
Experience in a 300+ bed facility is required.
A floor therapist needs a minimum of 1 year of experience; a critical care therapist needs a minimum of 2 years.
Experience with intubating patients and comfort with intubation are required.
Must be accustomed to high and heavy workloads.
Must be able to work in an adult ICU and manage ventilators.
Must be comfortable making suggestions for ventilator management, reading ABGs, and alerting staff to critical values.
Unit Details:
Respiratory therapists are the first line for intubations during codes.
The workload includes 550 minutes of treatment per shift, averaging 15 minutes per treatment and 13-15 patients per shift.
Uses Servo U and I model ventilators.
Work includes nebulizer treatments, airway management, Vapotherm, BiPAP, CPAP, ventilator management, ABG collection, bedside PFTs, and CPT; in the ICU, therapists place A-lines, manage blood gases, intubate, and perform bronchoscopies.
Adult-service RTs treat pediatric through adult patients; NICU RTs are separate from adult needs.
Common disease processes include COPD, CHF, pneumonia, respiratory failure, ARDS, cancers, and others.
In the ICU, therapists may manage up to 4 airways, including a ventilator or heated-aerosol tracheostomy off the ventilator.
A hospitalist or intensivist is in-house 24/7.
A 24/7 pharmacy is available.
A-line placement is taught on the job.
Shift & Scheduling:
The schedule is Fri-Sun.
Holidays rotate with permanent staff; every other holiday can be expected.
There is no call.
