Required Credentials:

  • You are required to pass a Basic Dysrhythmia/EKG exam during onboarding.
  • Pass/fail open-book skills exam on Friday during orientation covering skills learned; must score 90% to pass or contract will be terminated.

Special Requests:

  • Any employment gaps greater than 30 days must be explained.
  • Cannot have worked at any CommonSpirit location within the last 12 months.
  • Cannot be full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit, including CHI or Dignity.
  • Cannot apply to more than one job order on the same unit and shift at the facility.
  • Will approve a limited amount of block scheduling.

Unit Details:

  • Med Surg Neuro unit caring for Med Surg/Tele patients including stroke patients, stable neurological deficits, post-neurosurgery patients, and Med Surg overflow.
  • Common patient population includes joint replacements, fractures, colon resections, COPD exacerbation, prostatectomy, cellulitis, sepsis, ortho trauma, GI bleeds, pneumonia, and failure to thrive.
  • Titrate heparin, lidocaine, and ketamine drips; PCA pumps in use.
  • Tele techs interpret rhythms; RNs should have tele awareness.
  • No RT equipment troubleshooting.
  • Charge nurse on each shift; patient care tech support ratios 1:10-20.
  • Mechanical lifts available in every other room.
  • Unit typically has multiple discharges and admissions in one day.
  • Serves patients from diverse cultural backgrounds, including Spanish, Karen, and Burmese populations.

Shift & Scheduling:

  • At least every other weekend, but additional weekend shifts may be required based on unit needs and census.
  • 2-3 holidays from Thanksgiving to New Year's.

Floating Requirements:

  • Float to other medical-surgical areas or to units with Med Surg patients waiting for a Med Surg bed.
