SD License Renewal

  • Renewal cadence: Biannually. The process is the same for RNs and LPNs. Check your license expiration date on your current nursing license. You can click here to see more details about your nursing license.  
  • Renewal fee: $115.00, fees are the same for RN and LPN applicants. 
  • Required contact hours: Employment verification proving you have completed at least 140 hours of employment in any 12-month period or an accumulated total of at least 480 hours within the preceding 6 years.
  • Renewal is done online. You can start the renewal process here. You will need your SSN and nursing license number to begin. 

Important Things to Know about South Dakota Nurse Licenses

  • Your application is valid for 12 months. If incomplete after 12 months have passed, your application will be discarded and you must reapply and repay the application fee. 
  • You will not receive a paper copy of the temporary permit. Verification of your temporary permit can be found on the South Dakota Board of Nursing website
  • State-approved refresher courses can be found here.

  •  A receipt with a confirmation number will display at the end of your application and after submitting the payment. Print the receipt as proof of payment; you will not be emailed a receipt.

Process


Permanent License

  1. Submit an application online and pay the fee. The process is the same for RNs and LPNs. 
  2. Request verification of licensure via Nursys from your original state of licensure. If this state does not participate in Nursys, you will need to contact that state's BON and request verification be sent to the South Dakota BON via the Verification of Licensure form.
  3. Provide a completed Verification of Employment form showing you have completed at least 140 hours of nursing employment or volunteer hours in the past 12 months or 480 hours in the past 6 years. Completed forms can be emailed to sdbon@state.sd.us.

  1. Provide a background check with fingerprints. Fingerprint cards and instructions will be mailed to you at the address you enter on your online application. 
  • You must use the fingerprint cards sent to you by the SD Board of Nursing. Return the completed fingerprint cards to the Board of Nursing office with the required fee in the form of a money order.

Temporary License

  • It is illegal to practice in South Dakota as a nurse without a current license or a valid temporary permit.
  • A temporary permit is valid for 90 days and is non-renewable.
  • A temporary permit will be issued after the online application and request for a temporary permit are completed, along with a completed criminal background check card and fee.
