Maine Nurse Licensing Guide

Permanent License

The BON does not comment on a timeframe for permanent licensure. However, 2-3 weeks (with fingerprints completed outside of Maine) and 1-2 weeks (with fingerprints conducted in Maine) is typical.

Permanent License

1. Submit an application online and pay the fee. The process is similar for RNs and LPNs. Instructions for RNs are in Maine's RN endorsement requirements (PDF), and LPNs in Maine's LPN endorsement requirements (PDF).
2. Upload a current picture (not a copy of a driver’s license, ID, or passport). You must have a valid SSN to proceed with the application.
3. Upload a signature page that is manually signed (electronic signatures are not accepted).
4. Send in supporting documentation. All “yes” responses to questions in the disciplinary section of the application require a signed explanation (and court documents for any incidents that occurred less than 10 years ago). Send documentation to Endorsement.PFRNursing@maine.gov or:

5. Transcripts may be required on a case-by-case review of applications. The transcript should be emailed or mailed to the above addresses.
6. Complete the fingerprinting and background check process. Go to www.maine.gov/boardofnursing. Click through to the Maine Board of Nursing homepage, and select “I want to obtain a criminal background check and follow the instructions. The criminal background check results are only valid for 90 days.
7. Submit verification of your original licensure through Nursys. If you state does not participate in Nursys, submit proof of licensure directly to the Maine BON with any other supporting documents.

Endorsement Application: RNs: $75.00, LPNs: $50.00

• A legal resident of another compact state moving to Maine would need to provide a Declaration of Primary Residence Form when the applicant relocates to Maine.

• Applications are processed in the order they are received. You can check the status of your application by clicking through to the Maine Board of Nursing site and selecting “I want to check the status of an application.”
• A license will be emailed to the current email address on file with the board.
• TOEFL is required for foreign or Canadian applicants prepared in a program with texts and instruction in a language other than English.
• Applicants who have been educated at a Foreign (Country other than the United States) educational facility and who are seeking licensure in Maine from the Maine Board of Nursing must report ALL foreign licenses to be verified/validated through CGFNS and reported in the CES report.

• Renewal cadence: Every 2 years. When you are issued your first nursing license (depending on your birthdate), your license will be active for at least one year and no more than two years. After you renew your license for the first time, you will renew your license every two years on or before your birthday.
• Renewal fee: RN: $75.00, LPN: $50.00
• Required contact hours: None.
• Online renewal is mandatory, and there is no grace period for expired licenses. You are unable to practice if you do not meet the renewal requirements before expiration.
