How long does it take to get an Ohio Nursing License?

Permanent License

The BON does not comment on a timeframe for permanent licensure. 

Temporary License

OH License Renewal

  • Renewal cadence: Every 2 years. RNs renew in even-numbered years, and LPNs renew in odd-numbered years. Renewal opens from July 1 to September 15. Late fees will be incurred by nurses who do not complete renewal by September 16th. 
  • Renewal fee:
    - SSL: $65.00   
    - MSL: $75.00 
    - Late renewals will incur an additional fee of $50.
  • Required contact hours: 24 hours of continuing education are required for each 2-year renewal period. Click here for more information. 
    - A nurse who has been licensed in Ohio by reciprocity for less than or equal to one year prior to the first Ohio license renewal must complete at least 12 contact hours rather than 24.
  • The final deadline for renewal is October 31. If you do not renew your license during the renewal period, your license will lapse. If you wish to practice in Ohio, you will be required to apply for reinstatement.

Important Things to Know about Ohio Nurse Licenses

  1. All fees must be paid using a debit or credit card, American Express is not accepted. There is a $3.50 processing fee for all card payments.

OH Licensure by Endorsement


Permanent License

  1. Create an account on the Ohio eLicense Homepage, submit an application, and pay the fee. The process is similar for RNs and LPNs, but there are different application forms. 
  2. You can find the RN application form here and the LPN application form here
  3. A SSN is required for application. 
  4. Request verification of licensure via Nursys from your original state of licensure and the state where you are currently employed. If these states do not participate in Nursys, you will need to contact that state's BON and request verification be sent to the Ohio BON via license-verify@nursing.ohio.gov.
  5. If evidence of your pre-licensure nursing education is not included in your nursing verification, you must request transcripts from your pre-license nursing education program to be sent to the Board. You may also send other documentation acceptable to the Board, such as a copy of your application for initial licensure by examination in the other jurisdiction.
  6. Provide evidence of completion of 2 continuing education hours from this list of acceptable courses.
  7. You must pass an English proficiency exam if you are a foreign-educated nurse. 
  8. Complete a criminal background check with fingerprints. Instructions for completing the background check can be found here. You will find specific instructions for in-state and out-of-state fingerprinting. Be sure to use fingerprinting code reason ORC 4723.091 in your fingerprinting forms.

Temporary License

  1. Temporary permits are valid for 6 months and are nonrenewable.
  2. Reciprocity applicants may be issued a temporary permit to practice in Ohio, effective for 180 days, authorizing them to practice until they complete the remainder of the requirements for their license to be issued.
