Occupational Therapists care for patients with conditions that can interfere with daily activities, such as surgical procedures, arthritis, neurological diseases (for instance, stroke and multiple sclerosis), injuries related to an accident, and developmental conditions. Examples of job responsibilities for Occupational Therapists are patient assessment and developing a plan of care. The care plan may include exercises, how to use assistive devices, and strategies tailored to the person’s role at work and home. Occupational Therapists, who may supervise Occupational Therapy Assistants, obtain certification through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy. In addition, the American Occupational Therapy Association offers Occupational Therapists the opportunity to achieve board certification or specialty certification in certain areas.
