Unit Details:
- Provides daily care for cancer patients, including accurate interpretation and delivery of radiation treatments in accordance with the prescription and instruction of the radiation oncologist.
- May perform simulations and provide clinical instruction for radiation therapy students.
- Required during brachytherapy procedures.
- Assists in treatment planning procedures, including tumor localization and dosimetry.
- Triages sick patients to nursing for evaluation.
- Interfaces with physicist and dosimetrist at initiation of treatment.
- Checks prescription, diagnosis, chart, and patient identification; schedules patients; prepares room and equipment according to the prescription, immobilization devices, field sizes, treatment devices, distance, and lead (Pb) protection devices; takes and checks images of treated areas and processes/files them; transfers patients to the treatment couch; is aware of I.V.s; maintains visual and audible contact with patients during treatments; maintains patient markings and changes them according to physician direction; reinforces patient care recommendations concerning reaction to treatment and care of the radiated area, including dressing, hygiene, and prevention or treatment of generalized and local side effects; changes dressings as necessary; observes for unusual reactions or events, reports to designated personnel, and assists in emergency treatment; observes radiation safety measures for patient and personnel; checks charges daily for accurate billing; documents treatment doses accurately; uses the original electronic chart at all times; checks name and date of birth along with treatment area and records in the daily timeout; sets up IMRT and 3-D patients properly in CT; makes immobilization devices for 2-D, 3-D, and IMRT patients; documents proper setup instructions; and documents all pertinent information for dosimetry calculations in charts.
