Required Credentials: PA legislature House Bill 81 enacted 10/29/2020 and became effective 12/27/2020. Must have completed a program sponsored by nationally recognized institutional or programmatic accreditation and maintain certification; or have completed an appropriate military training program; or maintain certification from an accredited program; or have been employed as a surgical tech in a health care facility on or before 12/27/2020; or have been employed as a surgical tech at another health care facility in the two years before 12/27/2020. Staff grandfathered under the law are not required to have certification.
Special Requests: Clinicians may be eligible for an earlier start date if they have recent PA fingerprint results and PA Child Abuse Clearance results obtained within <5 years.
Unit Details: Perform operating room sterile setup, pass instruments, sponges, and sutures, prepare sterile supplies, assist with operating room cleanup, check equipment placement and operation, and restock the operating room. Prepare patients for surgery by washing, shaving, ensuring aseptic incision sites, transporting and positioning patients, and applying sterile drapes. Assist the surgical team with sterile gowns and gloves; hold retractors or instruments, cut sutures, sponge or suction the operative site under surgeon supervision, count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments, assist with specimen handling and dressings, and ensure medications are labeled and handed to the surgeon according to policy. Access to medications is limited to distribution of the medication to the nurse. Help transfer patients to the recovery room and maintain a clean, safe environment with continued alertness to safety, explosive hazards, and aseptic technique.
