How long does it take to get a Maryland Nursing License?

Permanent License

The board does not comment on a timeframe for permanent licensure. However, 3-4 weeks is typical.

Temporary License

Within 3-5 days of all required materials.

MD License Renewal

  • Renewal cadence: Renewal of your license occurs every 2 years, on the 28th day of your birth month. If you were born in an even year, you will renew in an even year. If you are born in an odd year, you will renew in an odd year. 
  • Notices are sent to the email address on file with the BON approximately 3 months before expiration. 
  • Renewal fee: RN: $136.00, LPN: $110.00. 
  • Required contact hours: 30 contact hours, or 1,000 working hours in the last 5 years. Click here for more information. 
  • If a renewal applicant is required to complete a background check as part of the renewal process, additional processing time beyond 10 days is required. You may request a 30-day extension for renewal from the board if you are unable to meet requirements before expiration.

  • The board no longer issues paper licenses. You can print your information from the BON website free of charge. 
  • The Maryland Board of Nursing requires applicants for temporary licenses to use a permanent mailing address when completing the application for licensure. This is especially important for licensees who are not going to reside in Maryland for an extended period of time. 

MD Licensure by Endorsement

Process

Permanent License

  1. Submit an application online and pay the fee.
  2. Click here for background check and fingerprinting instructions. You will need to use Agency Authorization# 9300000850 and ORI# MD920480Z​ whether you are fingerprinting in or out of state.  
  • If you are located in Maryland, you need to submit your application within 48 hours of completing the background check and fingerprinting.   
  1. Request verification of licensure via Nursys from your original state of licensure. If this state does not participate in Nursys, you will need to contact that state's BON and request verification be sent to the Maryland BON via the Verification Form.
  2. Complete official transcripts from all Nursing Schools/Programs will need to be emailed to the Maryland Board of Nursing Endorsement Unit. The Board will only accept official transcripts emailed directly from a digital credentialing service. 
  1. If your nursing school is not on this list of approved nursing schools and programs, submit this assessment tool link to the dean or director of your nursing program. 
  2. Click here for additional requirements if your nursing education was completed outside of the United States. 


Temporary License

  1. You may apply for a temporary license at the same time that you apply for licensure by endorsement in Maryland. You may apply for a temporary license by checking the option for a temporary license on the endorsement application. 
  2. After your application is submitted, a member of the Board’s staff will verify that you possess an active, unencumbered license in another state and that you have been fingerprinted for a criminal history records check. 
  3. If you meet those requirements, the Board will issue a temporary license to you within 3-5 business days. 
  4. Applicants who hold a multistate license but are moving to Maryland and applying for endorsement should not apply for a temporary license because the multistate licensure privilege to practice permits the applicant to practice in Maryland while the endorsement application is pending.
