How long does it take to get a New Mexico Nursing License?

The BON does not comment on a timeframe for permanent licensure. 

Temporary License

The BON does not comment on a timeframe for temporary licensure. 



NM License Renewal

  • Renewal Cadence: Renewal of your license occurs every 2 years. The process the the same for RNs and LPNs. Licenses initially issued by exam and endorsement will be for a period of one year, plus the months to the applicant’s birth month. After the first renewal cycle, licenses will be valid for 2 years.
  • Renewal fee: $110.00
  • Required contact hours: 30 hours per renewal period. Continuing education must be uploaded to CE Broker prior to submitting your renewal. 
  • Submit a renewal application and fee through the Nurse Portal.
  • Your license will be renewed within 24-48 hours after submission if there are no complications or additional information needed to complete the renewal process. Please allow 72 hours for the reactivation of a license.

  • Payment is made by credit/debit card.
  • To obtain a MSL, follow these steps: Your Primary State of Residency must be in New Mexico in order to become eligible for multi-state privileges. You will need to log into your Nurse Portal account and submit a message through the message center requesting the multi-state status. You will need to upload your NM driver’s license and social security card as well as complete fingerprints for a background check.

Process

Permanent License

  1. Register through the online portal, submit an application, and pay the fee. The process is the same for RNs and LPNs. The BON only accepts online applications. 
  2. Register and complete a criminal background check through Idemia/IdentoGo. Initial fingerprints are retrievable for 30 days, so please print them after submission of your application. Accepted fingerprints are good for the duration of your active initial application, which is one year. 
  3. You can find more information on fingerprinting for the New Mexico BON here. There are different instructions for in-state and out-of-state applicants. 
  4. Request verification of licensure via Nursys from your original state of licensure. If this state does not participate in Nursys, you will need to contact that state's BON and request verification be sent to the New Mexico BON.


Temporary License

  1. If you wish to be issued a provisional license, please indicate this on your application. Once all items have been received by the BON, you may be issued a provisional license.
  2. Temporary permits are valid for 6 months.
