Unit Details:
Patient ratios are 1:1 for pitocin, magnesium, or insulin drips and 1:3 for couplet care.
The patient population is a mix, mainly obstetric and neonatal, including hypertension and gestational diabetes; the unit tries to avoid deliveries before 36 weeks.
The unit averages 58 births per month.
C-sections are performed on the unit.
RNs titrate pitocin, insulin, and magnesium drips.
RT equipment includes vents, CPAP, BiPAP, and high-flow equipment; RNs are only expected to troubleshoot it.
Tele/monitor techs are not assigned; RNs read their own strips.
Tele monitors are Philips.
Uses Traceview/PIP for electronic fetal monitoring.
OB/neonatologist and anesthesia are not in-house 24/7.
The unit is locked.

Shift & Scheduling:
Day/night rotation with shifts of 0645-1915 or 1845-0715.
Every other weekend.
Every other holiday.
Call requirements depend on staffing.

Floating Requirements:
Floating is to Med-Surg and the ER as needed, or wherever in the hospital the nurse is needed; permanent staff are usually first to float.
