Roles requiring state licensure only: License should not expire within 45 days following start date
Required Skills/Experience:
Must be willing to work charge as needed.
Must have completed at least 1 assignment at a facility comparable in size and acuity.
RN skills required include titrating Pitocin, fetal scalp electrodes, cervical exams, helping the CRNA with epidural placement, management of insulin drips and magnesium drips, shoulder dystocia, circulating C-sections and/or receiving the baby in the OR, neonatal resuscitation, assisting with placement and monitoring of IUPC, and providing lactation support for newborn care.
Special Requests:
Housing in ME becomes more expensive in the summer months, beginning in May. Be sure to confirm you are comfortable with housing options before applying.
RTO requires manager approval.
You can only have 1 active application for the same position (same unit & shift at the same facility). Example: if you apply for day shift, you can also apply for night shift on the same unit and facility, but you cannot apply for another day shift position on the same unit & facility.
Travel Pairs: If you are in a relationship, EMMC will not schedule you on the same days. If you are not in a relationship, you can be scheduled for the same days if not on the same shift/unit. Managers will not guarantee the same schedule for travel pairs.
Unit Details:
The facility has a Level III NICU and Newborn Nursery.
The unit covers a large geographical area and receives many referrals, including cases requiring NICU care; the facility has one of two NICUs in Maine.
The unit averages 1800 deliveries per year.
Typically, the unit handles 4 scheduled events daily, including C-sections, versions, etc.
Pre-op/PACU care occurs in labor rooms, including for pre-scheduled events.
L&D RNs may monitor overflow antepartum patients.
Lactation support is provided by pool staff, with many CLCs and IBCLCs assisting in labor rooms.
Mother-Baby uses a rooming-in model.
Labor & Delivery and Mother-Baby are physically separate units next to one another in a locked, circular unit.
Common patient types and diagnoses include PIH, GDM, pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, HELLP, shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage (assessed on admission, intrapartum, and postpartum), multiples, fetal loss, drug addiction, and cervical ripening.
When a mother stays on the unit for continuous surveillance (Mag x 24hrs), the labor nurse documents the baby's feeds, vitals, and assessment; Mother-Baby staff complete testing, and core staff usually perform I-STAT or bridge milk (PHDM) on babies.
The RN catches the baby and provides care at delivery.
Patient ratios: cervical ripening 1:1-3; laboring 1:1-3; active labor 1:1; couplet/postpartum/antepartum: 3 M/B couplets or 3 antepartum/NICU moms.
Fetal monitoring is remote at the bedside and nurses' station; the unit uses Fetal Link, Alaris IV pumps, and Pyxis medication dispensing.
Shift & Scheduling:
Shift times: 0700-1930 or 1900-0730.
Weekend rotation: out of 8 weekend shifts per schedule, will work at least 4 (could be back-to-back).
No call required; may be an option to pick up call.
Holiday expectations: will do a rotation.
RTO maximum: 14 days.
Floating Requirements:
Could float to Mother-Baby, but would only cover antepartum, postpartum, or occasionally Mother-Baby; the Newborn Nursery RN would do 24 hr labs.
Pre-employment modules may be required for this role. Please upload any certifications or health documents you have to your profile to expedite your on-boarding process.
